Learning unit contents
Introduction to epidemiology
The course will address in particular the following themes:
- definition of epidemiology,
- description of epidemiological approaches (descriptive, aetiological, evaluative)
- definition, calculation, interpretation of measurements of frequency,
- definition, calculation, interpretation of measurements of associations,
- types of studies/epidemiological surveys,
- sampling and sample size,
- sources of error in epidemiological studies,
- diagnostic value of a test.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Introduction to epidemiology
Introduce basic concepts in epidemiology. The importance of the use of appropriate statistical methods in designing public health surveys and epidemiological studies, as well as in analysing the results, will be stressed.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Introduction to epidemiology
The student should master the basic concepts in Public health. The student must have taken the course of Biostatistique (STAT0730-2).
