Learning unit contents
This course aims to introduce students to the main principles of orthopedagogical intervention to optimize the development and well-being of persons with disabilities. The selected angle will consider these people in different periods of their lives (Life-Span Perspective) and try to understand the factors influencing their adaptation to various environmental situations. It will include the analysis of the needs of persons with disabilities and taking into account their evolution.
The practical work includes problem based learning session and field visit. It aims at giving the students the opportunity to think about how to elaborate a global intervention project taking count of the environment and of the specific needs of disabled children, to develop his knowledge of the disability-related network and to develop his ability to interact with the field actors.
Topics covered include early intervention, diagnosis announcement, empowerment, intervention with children with autism spectrum disorders, intervention with children with genetic syndromes, prematurity,educational guidance with parents, education to emotional, relational and sexual life in adults with intellectual disabilities, intervention in situations of abuse / neglect. Themes may vary from one year to another.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course and practical work, students will be able to consider an intervention project adapted to the circumstances and needs of people with disabilities. They will have knowledge of professional networks.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The program provides multiple learning methods to enable students to grasp the main principles of the intervention on people with disability or at risk. It is therefore proposed theoretical contents, presentations by professionals specialized in some specific interventions, videos, a working group, observation in real situation (whether opportunities allow) and problem-based learning sequences (PBL)

Assessment methods and criteria
June : assessment based on :
- Mandatory participation to the PBL
- Oral presentation by groups of students on a specific topic
- Oral exam (based on the lessons and on the work presented by the students)
- Mandatory participation to the PBL (those who did not took part to the PBL session during the academic year will not be allowed to pass the exam in the second exam session)
- Improvement of the written work based on the comments received (only in case of failure on this part)
- Oral exam (based on the lessons and on the work presented by the students)
Work placement(s)
Organizational remarks
Attendance to PBL is mandatory and determines the access to the oral exam. The student has to succeed each part of the course to obtain a final mark of success If one part is failed, the global rating for the course unit is the rating of the failed part.
