Learning unit contents

Part A

This part of the PHYS2009-1(2) course is an introduction to nuclear physics. The aim is to familiarize the students with elementary concepts. The main investigated subjects are the nuclei, the radioactive decay, the different decays, the interactions between matter and particles. Various applications are also discussed: fission, fusion, dating, material analysis, medical techniques,..

Part B

This part oft the PHYS2009-1 course is an introduction to quantum mechanics. The experiments leading the physicists to reconsider the classical physics are discussed. Main chapters : the models of atoms and the first quanta theory, quantum mechanics and quantum mechanics of atoms.

Part C

This part of PHYS2009-1 course is related to exercices sessions and laboratories of modern physics.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Part A

Initiate the students to nuclear physics and some of its applications.

Part B

- Explain to the students the reasons having conducted scientists to introduce quantum physics.

Part C

- Initiate the students to solve problems.
- Initiate the student to write laboratory reports.

Assessment methods and criteria

Part A

PHYS2009-1
Theory : oral exam (2st and 2nd session). 50% (PHYS2009-A-a et PHYS2009-B-a) of the final quotation of PHYS2009-1.

PHYS2009-2
Oral presentation.

Part B

Theory : oral exam (2st and 2nd session). PHYS2009-A-a et PHYS2009-B-a quotations represent 50% of the final quotation of PHYS2009-1

Part C

Exercices : written exam (2st and 2nd session). 25% of the final quotation of PHYS2009-1.
Laboratory reports are quoted; the quotation is taken into account at a level of 1/4 of PHYS2009-1. The laboratory quotation will be transfer for the 2nd period exams.
