Advanced philosophy of sciences

Starting from specific issues of contemporary science (especially in mathematics, physics and biology), epistemological questions will be raised within a dialogue between scientists and philosophers.

First degree philosophical or scientific training.

Students are expected to attend three meetings : november 20, fabruary 28 and march ??.

First term: on Wednesdays from 1pm to 3pm (A1 Building, Room Philo II)
October 2018 : Laurence Bouquiaux & Bruno Leclercq (general epistemology) :

  • 10/10/2018 & 24/10/2018 : the question of realism in science
November 2018 : Georges Hansoul (mathematics)
  • 8/11/2018 & 15/11/2018 (or at some other moment of those weeks) : notions of completeness and incompleteness
December 2018 : Pascal Poncin (biology, part I) :
  • 5/12/2018, from 2pm to 4pm : sexual and asexual reproduction, sexual differentiation
  • 12/12/2018 : genetic manipulation as well as egg and embryo manipulation
Second term: on Thursdays from 9am to 12am (I1 Building, Room salle des professeurs ou salle Jeuniaux)
February-March 2019 : Pascal Poncin (biology, part II) :
  • 7/2/2019 : origin of life and life diversification
  • 14/2/2019 & 21/2/2019 : origin of man and genetic diversity (with D. Baurain and skulls' manipulation)

Students will be provided with bibliographic information at the first meeting.

Assessment methods and criteria

Seminar on the philosophy of sciences

Students are expected to attend the seminar.
Students have to write a paper about one of the questions raised during the course

Advanced philosophy of sciences

Oral and written presentation of an essay (10 pages) articulating epistemological questions with some of the scientific problems considered in the seminar. These scientific problems should be adequately mastered.
The topic of the essay should be chosen before March 31. The essay itself should be orally presented at the beginning of May and handed in before May 12 (or August 15).
