Learning unit contents
The adult training methodology course proposes a general view of the most common methods used to train and teach adults. The main training methods are discussed, as well as the different methods that can be used in this context. As part of the class, students have the possibility to test some of those methods.
The course is organized in collaboration with the University of Lille 1 (France).
The course is based on the following assumptions:
- The methods of adult training are diverse and constantly evolving.
- Selection of training methods should be based on several parameters: the characteristics of the target audience, the objectives, the cultural, social and organizational context, the competencies of the trainer, the learning tools and situations that are available or can be created, the demand, the needs (whether expressed or concealed), the strategic challenges of the individuals taking part in the training, the choice of learning style, the financial and technical resources available.
- It is essential for the (future) professional trainers and educators to be aware of and to be able to describe and criticize the various methods of adult training.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, the students will be able to:
- describe the characteristics of the adults being trained
- describe the various methods of adult training, not only those related to group training but also the more recent training strategies
- know the various methods that can be used within a training strategy
- to reflect about and define a personal training philosophy with respect to adult training
- to be exposed to various training methods and to develop a critical assessment of those methods

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
10 hours of practical work are organized at the University of Lille 1 through a one-day workshop there. The students can choose between four subjects (this year: training engineering, individualization of training, seniors and training, validation of what has been acquired during training). Next, the students must construct a training session about the day they spent in Lille and aimed at the other students (see also Evaluation).
The students also participate in the training sessions organized by the other students.

Assessment methods and criteria
Students will be assessed in the following way:
- students participate, in groups, in a theme-based workshop day at the University of Lille 1. They choose between one of the four proposed subjects (see "practical work")
- students prepare a 3 hour long training session on that specific subject and aimed at the other students
- students receive a formative evaluation from the other students
- quantitative assessment of the student by the professor is based both on the quality of the content of the training session and on the adequate use of training methods
