Learning unit contents

Theory

This course introduces the basic principles of social science research.
It is organized around five points:

  • General points on the scientific approach in social sciences
  • Definition and development of the various acts and stages of social science research
  • Analyses and studies of some typical researches (different methods)
  • The relationship concept / indicators
  • Elements of formalization

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Theory

Make students sensitive to the methods of the sociological reasoning.
The course is structured around three fundamental acts and around 7 stages which help the student to enter gradually the research procedure and, at the end of the year, to have a general outline of the way a research in social sciences takes place.

Theory

The course is built around the book "Manuel de recherche en sciences sociales" of Quivy and Van Campenhoudt.
Learning methods are based on ex-cathedra lectures, external interventions, formative and evaluative exercises, and interactions with students.

"Manuel de recherche en sciences sociales", Quivy and Van Campenhoudt (Paris, Dunod, 2011, 4th ed.) + a syllabus of secondary texts.

  • 1st session: written examination
  • 2nd session: written examination

First session will take place on Thursday, October 11 from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm.

Pratice

The TP session will take place on November 6, 2018 between 4:00 pm and 6:30 pm
