Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Introduction to research in mathematics through the study of a (portion of a) mathematical article / book chapter published in English.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course the student will have worked alone to understand the manuscript. His/her understanding of the results will be sufficient for the student to present them in a convincing way during a 40 minute oral presentation without notes on the blackboard.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
MATH0257-2 - Analyse II, 2e partie
MATH0482-3 - Probability and statistics II
MATH0248-1 - Géométrie II
MATH0246-2 - Algèbre II
LANG0077-1 - Anglais I (anglais)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
A list of topics (each containing a bibliographic reference as well as a short description) will be made available at the beginning of the academic year. Each topic will be presented by a promoter.
The mathematical difficulty of the topics will be taylored so as to ensure that 3d year students of the bachelors in maths at ULiège will be able to read them. A topic can either be devoted to an entire article / book chapter or only to a portion that the promoter believes to be of sufficient interest.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
The student is encouraged to take regular appointments with his promoter.
Recommended or required readings
Assessment methods and criteria
Evaluation of the students achievements will be based on an oral presentation in French or in English. The presentation will last exactly 40 minutes. It will be performed without notes on a blackboard in front of the coordinator and the promoter and any exterior person who may wish to attend. If the need arises, the student may use exterior elements (projections, softwares, artefacts) for illustrative purposes. The student is not allowed to use slides (beamer, powerpoint, ...).
The final grade will be attributed in equal parts by the coordinator (who measures the relative quality of the presentation) and the promoter (who judges the individual scientific quality).
