Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Part 1 : Descriptive statistics
This part of the course is devoted to the recall of statistical concepts taught in secondary school as well as to the presentation of some extensions. The learning of a statistical software is also planned in this part.
Part 2 : Complement of descriptive statistics
Basic concepts of descriptive statistics are taught, interpreted and mathematically justified in this course. More precisely, here follows the content of the course:
- Statistical tables and graphics
- Summary statistics (central tendency, dispersion and shape)
- Correlation analysis and linear regression
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Part 1 : Descriptive statistics
The student will have to be able to present and interpret data in an adequate manner, in particular using the taught statistical software.
Part 2 : Complement of descriptive statistics
After the course, the student should be able to outline the advantages and disadvantages of the different techniques. He/she should alos be aware of their limitaiton in practice, using their mathematicial properties.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Part 1 : Descriptive statistics
The statistical techniques included in the official program of secondary school in Belgium are assumed to be known but some additional notes will be available for students who need to revise these notions.
Part 2 : Complement of descriptive statistics
Basic concepts of analysis and algebra taught in secondary school.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Part 1 : Descriptive statistics
In Bachelor of mathematics, the course is concentrated in 3 ex-cathedra lectures as well as in practical sessions organized in the computer room of the mathematical department.
In Bachelor of informatics, the lectures corresponding to this part of the course are included in the lectures of the other part « compléments de statistique descriptive ». Practical sessions in a computer room are also planned.
In both cases, basic exercises are available on-line on eCampus and will be advocated.
Part 2 : Complement of descriptive statistics
The type of teaching for the theory part is ex-cathedra. The professor uses beamer projections or writes on the black boards. When slides are used, these will be available in advance on eCampus.
The tutorials combine ex-cathedra presentation and individual work for the students. It is recommended to check the good knowledge of the content of the course via the on-line QCMs.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Part 1 : Descriptive statistics
The lectures are organised face-to-face according to the official schedule. They will usually be recorded using the podcast system. The students may then watch the video when they wish.
The practicals are organised in the computer room of the mathematical department according to the official schedule available on celcat. In order to organize these practicals as best as possible, registration will be required via ecampus.
Part 2 : Complement of descriptive statistics
The courses and the tutorials are given face-to-face over the second semester according to a timetable distributed to the students in the beginning of the academic year.
The theory lectures are recorded by means of the podcast equipment installed in the lecture room. The students may visualize these recordings when they want.
Recommended or required readings
Part 1 : Descriptive statistics
Lecture notes and slides will be available and put on eCampus, chapter after chapter.
Part 2 : Complement of descriptive statistics
Same information as for partim 1.
Assessment methods and criteria
As specified in the description of the two parts, the overall evaluation is decomposed into two parts : a practical exam in the computer room for the part on descriptive statistics and a written exam for the part devoted to the complements of descriptive statistics. The weighting of the two parts is 30% for the first and 70% for the second. An exclusion mark (inferior than or equal to 5/20) obtained at one of the two parts imply a global failure (inferior than 10/20) for the course.
Part 1 : Descriptive statistics
This part of the course is evaluated by means of a pratical exam in the computer room in order to check thegood application of the techniques and the use of the software. The weight of this part will be specified in the overall description of the course.
Part 2 : Complement of descriptive statistics
This part of the course is evaluated by means of a written exam (with both exercises and theory questions), organized on the same day as the practical exam. The weight of this part is specified in the overall description.
Work placement(s)
Organizational remarks
Part 1 : Descriptive statistics
The course materials are avaialble on eCampus via the « partim1 : statistique descriptive » in BLOC 1 Math and via the « partim 2 : compléments de statistique descriptive » in BLOC 1 Info.
Part 2 : Complement of descriptive statistics
It is via this part (partim 2: complements of descriptive statistics) that the documents and pedagogical ressources will be put on line on eCampus.
