History of Hispanic literature

Due of the curriculum structure, the peninsular module of the course 'Histoire des littératures hispaniques' involves a lighter workload than the Latin-American module. Spanish literary texts from the Middle-Ages to the 20th Century will be read and studied. This consists of, partly, defining Spanish literature and its relationship to French language literature, but also to become aware of Hispanic particularities.
Students who already passed 'Introduction à l'histoire de la littérature espagnole' (LROM0119) will be able to apply their acquired knowledge to a new set of texts. Students without formal instruction in Spanish literature will receive a panoramic view of Spanish literature. This course may be seen as a Hispanic complement to 'Histoire des littératures romanes' (LROM0062).

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

• recognise the most widespread or historically important poetic forms of Spanish literature: sonnet, lira, romance, cuaderna vía, etc.

• chronologically place (albeit approximately) some Spanish texts. For example: when did the Picaresque novel really take off? And when was naturalism introduced to Spain?

• appreciate the importance of some authors and works in the history of Spanish literature. What is, for example, the role played by Garcilaso de la Vega, in the history of poetry? Why was Tirant lo Blanc one of Miguel de Cervantes favourite chivalrous books?

• recognise the originality and importance of some Spanish authors in the European context.

• appreciate the nuances between the definitions of some literary terms.

• provide examples of the relationship between Spanish letters and French literature.

• draft coherent and correct analytical texts (level C1) in Spanish.

The student should know the important stages in the history of spanish-american literature and the important authors and titles. He will read numerous extracts of texts (in the porfolio) and also 3 books.
