Learning unit contents

The research seminars (I et II), which subjects change every year, prepare the students to work in the field of linguistics by focusing on selected themes.
Current subjects:
- Q1, Proper nouns in the classification system of the parts of speech: (i) theoretical issues; (ii) definitional attributes, in a historiographic perspective; (iii) specific issues related to the proper nouns.
- Q2, Methods and theoretical issues in toponymy: (i) importance of toponymy in historical linguistics; (ii) major publications (belgoroman and galloroman toponymy); (ii) foundational methods of investigation; (iv) importance of toponymy in general linguistics; (v) importance of toponymy in historical studies. 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To induce the student to critical reflexion about the actual scientific productions, and to produce a personal scientific contribution.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Proficiency in French.
Excellent understanding of the basic notions in general linguistics.
All previous and parallel linguistic classes and the readings will be valuable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Readings, debates, presentations and written reports with the help of the teachers. 

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Discovering of the subject of the year in the first half of the year. Presentations by students, guests and professors during the second half of the year.

They will be provided during the teaching period.

- Langages 92 : Les parties du discours (ed. B. Colombat) : pp. 5-10 et pp. 109-112.
- Distinguishing between the concepts of noun and the one of substantive (Lemaréchal 1989 : 19-56).

Assessment methods and criteria

Work during the year. Written report and oral examination about the former.
The theme is the same at level I and II. However, at level II, the amount of work is expected to be higher than it is at level I (cf. ECTS).

Introduction meeting (presentation of linguistic courses in the LLFR MA): on Tuesday 18th Sept. 2018, 9:00AM (at the end of the first lesson of Lexicology and lexicography, by M.-G. Boutier).
First lecture: Oct. 1, 2018. P. Swigger's office.
The next sessions will be planned according to the students' schedules.
