Learning unit contents

The main subject of this course is the life of the text in the Middle Ages, considered from both the point of view of textual tradition and that of the critical edition of medieval Romance texts. Each lecture will be divided into two parts. The first part, predominantly theoretical, will consider principles, problems and aporias of textual criticism. The second part, more historical, will consider the long debate on editorial techniques that took place in the 19th and 20th centuries. This debate challenged, often in a radical way, the concepts of text and literature.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Analysis and interpretation of a textual tradition as a whole. This implies a critical consideration of scholarly edition of medieval Romance texts and awareness of the specificity of medieval Romance texts. Full understanding of the principal editorial methods and approaches to textual criticism.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Theoretical implications of the analysis of a textual tradition, considered on the basis of examples chosen from various traditions of Romance texts. What is a critical edition? How is it read? How is it used? How is a useful and high-quality critical edition prepared? We will go into further depth with these questions by working on both old and recent critical editions of Romance texts, evaluating their use and worth. We will chiefly work on printed books and on digitisations of manuscripts available online.

Recommended or required readings

A dossier and full bibliography will be provided during the course.

Assessment methods and criteria

Final oral exam. Discussion of the contents of the paper (50%), presentation of group work (in teams of 5-6 students) prepared by the student on a subject agreed with the professor (50%).
