Learning unit contents
The course will begin with an introduction to the study of masculinities in the context of the literatures of the African diaspora. The course will be devoted to the discussion of selected texs, including three novels, a film and a play.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, students are expected to master the main theoretical notions pertaining to the study of masculinity in literature. They will be able to use these notions in the textual analysis of literary works.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Good knowledge of English.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
First term, 2 hours a week. The course involves seminar discussions and the active participation of students.
Recommended or required readings
Poems and a few essays will be available at the beginning of the course.
Three novels and a play will be discussed in class:
- Chris Abani, Graceland, 2004 (Picador)
- Jackie Kay, Trumpet, 1998 (Picador)
- Kwame Kwei-Armah, Elmina's Kitchen, 2003 (Methuen)
- Caryl Phillips, In the Falling Snow, 2009 (Vintage)
Assessment methods and criteria
Written research essay which will be discussed during an oral examination.
