Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course has two main objectives: on a theoretical level, it aims at analysing some lexical and pragmatic  features of Dutch; on a practical level, its aim is to further develop the communication skills (both receptive and productive skills) of the students in Dutch.
In the theoretical part, we will tackle some general theoretical concepts relating to lexicology (conceptual and lexical categories, polysemy, prototype theory, embodiement,...) and pragmatics, and we will more specifically analyze the use of posture verbs, movement verbs and placement verbs one the one hand and of modal particles on the other.
In the practical part, we will train the communicative skills of the students by organizing the following activities:

  • reading and listening comprehension exercises;
  • vocabulary tests;
  • essay-writing;
  • the collection of a newspaper file.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, the students will be able:

  • to describe general principles of lexicology and pragmatics and apply them to Dutch;
  • to describe and explain the different mechanisms that explain the use of the structures we focused on;
  • to analyze these mechanisms in an original article;
  • to write a coherent essay on a specialized topic (C1 level)
  • to understand specialized texts (C1 level)
