Learning unit contents

This course has two main objectives: on a theoretical level, it aims at analysing some syntactic constructions that are particularly problematic for French-speaking learners of Dutch; on a practical level, its aim is to further develop the communication skills (both receptive and productive skills) of the students in Dutch.
In the theoretical part, we will tackle some syntactic constructions that are particularly problematic for French-speaking learners of Dutch, including er, pronominal adverbs and passive constructions..
In the practical part, we will train the communicative skills of the students by organizing the following activities:


  • reading and listening comprehension exercises;
  • essay-writing; 
  • the composition of a portfolio.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, the students will be able:

  • to describe general principe of Dutch syntax;
  • to describe and explain how word the syntactic constructions we discussed work in Dutch;
  • to analyze these constructions in an original article;
  • to write a coherent essay on a general topic (B2 level)
  • to understand specialized texts (B2+ level)
  • to follow a natural conversation in Dutch (B2 level)
to fluently speak Dutch (B2 level)

The course includes formal lectures which will be as interactive as possible on the one hand and practical sessions on the other.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Face-to-face mode of delivery.
Sessions of two hours a week.
Alternation of theoretical and practical sessions.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation will include a written and an oral exam. The written exam will include:

  • a writing proficiency task (essay writing);
  • a vocabulary test.
The oral exam will include:
  • the linguistic analysis of the portfolio;
  • the vocabulary of the portfolio;
  • the content of the portfolio (discussion).
The final mark will be calculated as follows:
  • Application of ther theory (10%). Oral exam on the basis of the portfolio;
  • Lexical knowledge (10%). Written exam (vocabulary treated during the practical sessions) and vocabulary from the portfolio (at the oral exam).
  • Portfolio (30%)
  • Oral proficiency (25%). oral exam
  • Writing skills (25%). written exam
First exam session in January, second exam session in August.
