Learning unit contents

The aims of this course have two aspects. The theoretical aspect of the course aims at introducing the students to the various authentic varieties of Dutch. The practical aspect of the course aims at reinforcing and developing the language skills and communication skills of the participants in Dutch, both in terms of reception (reading and listening comprehension) and in terms of production (written and oral expression). In the theoretical part, we will analyse the linguistic features of different varieties (standard and other) of Dutch. We will use as wide and diversified a range of authentic Dutch samples as possible.
In the practical part, we will reinforce the different linguistic skills of the students through various activities, among which:

  • listening and reading comprehension exercises (in class);
  • vocabulary tests;
  • essays;
  • presentations on cultural topics;
  • the creation of a portfolio of language learning activities;
  • analysis of Flemish newspapers;
  • a tandem project with a student from the University of Antwerp.
Through these various teaching activities (both theoretical and practical), students will be able to deepen their theoretical and practical knowledge of Dutch.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, the students will be able:

  • to list and describe the characteristics of various varieties of Dutch;
  • write a structured and coherent essay in Dutch (B2 level of the Common European framework);
  • to understand specialized texts in Dutch (level B2+ of the Common European framework)
  • conduct a natural conversation in Dutch (B2 level of the Common European framework)
At the end of the course, the students will also have acquired a good lexical knowledge of Dutch (B2 level of the Common European framework)

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment will include a written exam and an oral exam. In addition, evaluations will be organized throughout the semester.
The written examination will include the following parts:

  • writing an essay;
  • at least one reading comprehension exercise;
  • at least one listening comprehension exercise.
The oral examination will focus on:
  • the theory covered in class;
  • the portfolio (linguistic analysis and discussion);
  • the tandem project (discussion).
The final grade will be calculated as follows:
  • permanent evaluation during classes (20%);
  • oral exam (50%);
  • written exam (30%).
 
Note: if the students fail for one of these parts, they will fail for the whole course.
 
The written and oral exams for the first session are organized during the June session; second-term written and oral examinations are organized during the September session.
