Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course will consist of close readings and discussions of Elizabethan lyrics, prominent among which Shakespeare's sonnets, of a play by this same author, Romeo and Juliet, and of a contemporary novel which interestingly thematizes Shakespeare's posterity in a post-colonial context, the Australian Gail Jones's Sorry.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Enhance the students' ability to understand and interpret literary texts of whatever denomination, and to provide written analyses in the form of articulate essays in English.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The course is entirely taught in English.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Next to the seminars, some attention will be devoted to the difficulties of essay-writing and to the conventions governing the compilation of a bibliography.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Recommended or required readings

Apart from the poems (which will be circulated in class), the students will have to read the following texts:
William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet (Penguin Classics)
Gail Jones, Sorry (Vintage)

On top of this, they will be expected to choose freely, from a list that will be circulated, another two novels which will be discussed at the (oral) exam.

Assessment methods and criteria

A written and an oral exam will be organized in May/June and in August/September, 2018. The written exam will consist of an analysis of a sonnet by Shakespeare, while the oral exam will take the form of a discussion of Sorry and of two novels (of the student's free choice; see above), read in the light of the relevant secondary literature.
