Learning unit contents

The curriculum in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine comprises English language courses, which aim to give students a thorough command of written and spoken English in the field of veterinary medicine.
The purpose of the first-year course is : (1) to enable students to revise general English (CEFRL levels B1-B2 for reading) and (2) to introduce the basic vocabulary of veterinary Medicine in semi-autonomy (i.e. through guided self-learning).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The second first-year English course aims to revise the elements of general English and to introduce the scientific vocabulary. It also introduces and verifies listening ciomprehension skills.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge of general English grammar and vocabulary (B1 level).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

On top of the self-learning tasks based on a schedule posted online, the students will do six self-assessment tests for which they will receive a detailed online feedback and which will be corrected in class.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

This course is a blended course. Most of it takes place online but there are a few classes and meetings during the year. It consists of the second half of the course modules and tests listed below :
6 online modules with guided and supervised self-learning units


  • Grammar revision chapters with exercises and keys.
  • 2 online grammar progress tests.
  • 5 listening comprehension tests on eCampus.
  • 3 comprehensive self-assessment tests (with detailed online feedback and in-class correction).
  • 4 lectures with additional explanations and exercises.
All the tests and lectures are compulsory.

Recommended or required readings

(1) eCampus modules and exercises,
(2) ISLV grammar book (with exercises and keys) and/or interactve grammar website with exercises on eCampus, and
(3) The course book which contains the veterinary English articles of the e-campus modules, a self-study grammar course with exercises (and key online), the vocabulary of the course, and past exams.

Assessment methods and criteria

Two grammar progress tests and three listening comprehension tests to be done online.
Two self-assessment tests (reading comprehension and English in use MCTs of intermediate - B1/B2 levels) with detailed feedback in February and March.
A mock exam consisting of reading and listening comprehension, vocabulary and English in use MCTs of post-intermediate B2 level.
Written exam in June consisting of reading and listening comprehension, vocabulary and English in use MCTs of post-intermediate B2 level.
