Learning unit contents
This course aims to develop the students' skills in spoken scientific English (namely their note-taking and responding ability in lectures in the field of biomedical sciences) .
It is an advanced ESP course (CEFR) levels C1 for listening and note-taking skills, B2 for speaking).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The purpose of this course is to teach the students how to take notes efficiently during a scientific lecture in English in order to
(1) be able to answer accurate questions and/or
(2) respond on the subject of the lecture in English.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Pratique de l'Anglais Scientifique I (compulsory scientific English course in 3rd year of the Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Sciences) or equivalent (e.g. IELTS 6 or Cambridge Advanced English A- C).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
The course is comprised of:
- 6 hours of theory on academic note-taking in a foreign language taught to all students together,
- workshops (25 hours in all) in which the students will attend actual on-line and real lectures and take notes on the basis of which they will have to answer questions, provide syntheses and/or ask relevant questions. These workshops will be taught by researchers from the Faculty of Medicine.
Recommended or required readings
The theoretical course notes will be handed out in class.
Assessment methods and criteria
Exam in January. It consists in a listening comprehension and note-taking exercise on the basis of a scientific lecture.
