Learning unit contents

The main objective of the course of immunopathology is to initiate the student to the different modes of abnormal functioning of the immune system and their involvement in the occurrence of diseases. This course therefore makes a transition between the course of immunology (BAC2) on the one hand and the various courses dealing with pathologies on the other hand. Given the fact that this course is simultaneously given to students in biomedical sciences and in dentistry respectively, both fundamental and more clinical aspects are dealt with. Students in biomedical sciences are nevertheless invited to focus on the fundamental and mechanistic aspects of the course since the questions of the exam are differentiated accordingly. The chapters of the course are as follows

  • General introduction to the diseases involving the immune system
  • Primary immunodeficiencies
  • Acquired immunodeficiencies
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Hypersensitivites
  • Autoinflammatory syndromes
  • General principles of autoimmunity and exemples of organ-specific vs. systemic autoimmune diseases

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Learning outcomes have already been outlined in the previous sections. It is important to remind that this course is mostly an introduction. The student must focus on the basis and principles of the states of immunodeficiency, hypersensitivity, autoinflammation and autoimmunity. Students in biomedical sciences must particularly deal with in depth the translational links between molecular pathways and diseases as well as the biological analytical tools used for the diagnosis and follow-up of diseases.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

General Immunology General Microbiology General Biochemistry Genetics

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures Questions can be asked during and after the lectures as well as by E Mail.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Face-to-face (+ distance-learning for specific questions of the student) Podcasts are also available

Recommended or required readings

I recommend as a reference book : "Janeway's Immunobiology" 2011 8th edition (ISBN 9780815342434). This is not mandatory since the content of the slides kit is exhaustive regarding to the learning objectives.

Assessment methods and criteria

Open questions with short answers allowing to evaluate the understanding of the different concepts of the course. Possibility to attend the exam before the main session.
