Broad view of German history since 1806 with special attention given to political and institutional history and to historiographical debates.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The 19th and 20th c. German history is in fact the history of "several Germanys" which can only be understood in its European context. The course aims not only to analyse the past of our eastern neighbour but also to emphasize the difficulties of writing this past.
The course has two major issues: the study of a national history leading to a more comparative approach of European history in connection with the other courses and the reflection of the practice of writing history through the great historiographical debates in Germany.
