Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The goal of the course is to provide the student, at a very early stage of his studies, with information about specificities and requests of historical research.
After a general introduction to bibliography, with practical exercises, the student will be made familiar with critical reading of historical works and will exert himself in written composition in a scientifical context.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- understand and master the organization of the book collections in the ULg libraries;
- conduct a bibliographical and documentary research (works and reference books) on any historical subject; act in an autonomous way in the ULg libraries;
- present his research dedalus and its results according to the provided rules;
- extract the problems raised in a scientifical article and present them in a clear and concise way;
- single out and evaluate the heuristic used by an author to assess his conclusions;
- put in evidence the main results and, eventually, further research goals.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

A thorough command of the French language is of course necessary. If, after the test referred below, the student is still plagued by difficulties in the matter, we strongly urge him to consult the pedagogical assistant of the section (Mrs J. Austen; mail: Jacqueline.Austen@ulg.ac.be).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

 Compulsory test of French of the Institut supérieur des langues vivantes (ISLV) with anonymous results. Only tested students will be allowed to pass the examination.
General initiation to bibliography and documentary research; presentation of the ULg libraries; initiation to the use of a software in bibliographical reference (Zotero).
Initiation to the use of the great compendium works and to working aids such as dictionaries, chronologies, atlas, etc. Search for scientifical informations in printed or electronical form (if subscribed to by ULg) and critical exploration of free access sources on the Internet.
Presentation and step-by-step acquisition of a method for reading scientifical articles aimaing at:

- extract the problems raised in a scientifical article and present them in a clear and concise way;
- single out and evaluate the heuristic used by an author to assess his conclusions;
- put in evidence the main results and, eventually, further research goals.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Face-to-face: two or three hours a week during the whole academic year.
Exercises during classes.
Student is expected to furnish a regular work in preparation and writing outside the attendance to classes.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written examination in January and June.
The student must give proof of a sufficient command of the learnings acquired during each quadrimester.
Academic and Examination Regulations ("Landscape" Regime) - Art. 41 §2:
"Teaching staff may declare students inadmissible for exams when they have not taken part in the compulsory activities related to the course. The same is true for students who have not submitted, within the set delays or in the prescribed forms, reports, personal work or any work set in the context of the activity in question".
The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 10% of the June final mark if > or = 10/20 (the mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20). Please note that the final exam for this course is cumulative.
