Learning unit contents
The course develops the four skills in Dutch by means of practical reading, listening, written and oral expression based on tests and real audiovisual material taken from the Dutch-speaking Belgian media. By analyzing the supporting material, the students will be requested to ensure that they have a deep understanding of all the nuances and cultural references as well as implicit messages understood in the texts and audiovisual extracts. To ensure correct expression, a basic revision of the grammar is provided. Given the practical nature of the activities, active and regular participation is obligatory.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, the student will be capable of :
-understanding and correctly transcribing the content of the authentic audiovisual material with an average to high difficulty level taken from the Dutch press(NOS);
-locating explicit and implicit messages contained in the written and audiovisual reports.
The student will also be capable of using correct language (written and oral)to:
-summarize and comment on texts with a medium to strong difficulty level taken from thje Dutch press;
-explaining and paraphrasing sections of text;
-explaining in his or her own words the nuances, ideas and cultural references contained in the supporting materials;
-applying the grammar and vocabulary covered in specific exercises (subjects, grammar exercises) and, in an integrated way, to all written and oral work produced.
-producing a written essay in Dutch on a subject covered during the academic year while adhering to requirements in terms of the form and length of the document.

- reading exercises to be prepared at home: (comprehension: explain and/or paraphrase complex passages, answer questions based on the content of texts/vocabulary:definition of words, searching for synonyms and antonyms, identifying the correct meaning of polysemic words based on the context of the supporting material...).

Assessment methods and criteria
- 15% of the marks : continuous assessment (questions and work during the academic year, e-Tandem)
- 20% of the mark : January exam: listening comprehension + essay-writting (the latter formative assessment)
- 35% of the marks: written exam in June: essay-writing, grammar, reading comprehension, translation of sentences from French into Dutch by applying the grammar and vocabulary covered during the academic year
- 30% of the marks: oral examination: based on a collection of press articles and essays, the student will be orally examined on the subject content and vocabulary.
- Attention: students must pass both exams in June.
