Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course offers a survey of the major aspects of the art-historical research applied to the early modern period. It includes practical exercices in order to explicate and reconsider the most important methods and issues of the discipline (ekphrasis ; connoisseurship, the story of the Art History ; formalism ; contextualism : iconology and social history of art) and a theoretical and historical approach of those trends as well. Finally, it encourages an epistemological assessment of them.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To provide students with an introduction to the various skills expected of a university art historian when called upon to analyse the history of modern art. To introduce them to major figures in the history of the discipline, as well as the main trends and to works which constitute methodological reference points. To encourage critical reflection and to lay the foundations for epistemological reflection.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

- Having followed the BAC1 and BAC2 courses on History of Art and Archaeology
- Abilities expected of a Master student in Philosophy and Letters (for foreign students: sufficient knowledge of the French language)
- Capacity to read a bibliography partly composed of material in French, English and German

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

A considerable amount of personal commitment is expected of students. There are various exercises to be completed in class (reading articles and discussion, stylistic and iconographical analyses, etc) as well as preparing and drafting a report at home on a work of art chosen from the Liege public collections. This report must include a data sheet and a prose commentary wherein students should demonstrate their ability to carry out thorough heuristic research as well as their summarising and analytical skills. They must also carry out a critical summary of a book and a series of extracts from texts dealing with themes covered with in class. Instructions concerning these requirements will be given during the first class.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Alternating practical work and lectures. Lectures will be conducted by the course lecturer, Dominque Allart. Most exercises will be carried out in class. Preparation and drafting of the written reports (see above) will be carried out at home. Date for submission of the reports: 13 December 2018.

Recommended or required readings

Documents and bibliographic references will be given to students in line with the examined topics.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam will cover all the material dealt with in class and issues raised in discussions and in recommended readings. The overall assessment will consist of the average of grades obtained for presentations given during the seminar, including the drafting of the report, and the grade given for the examination.
