Learning unit contents

This course will not be taught in 2018-2019
The course will lead the student to enlarge and strengthen his vision of a world where environmental and natural resources issues will play a more and more important role. The topics which are analyzed will provide to the student the elements and skills that are necessary to meet the challenges that he will be facing as a responsible actor (citizen, consumer, member of an organization or company), at the strategic level as well as on a daily basis.
The course is an introduction to the principles and methods of environmental management: historical evolution of public awareness - principles of ecological approach - ecosystems dynamics - biogeochemical cycles - functions of the environment - factors of degradation - main issues (climate, ozone layer, biodiversity, ...) state of the environment - objectives of environmental policy - principles used (polluter-pays, precaution, ...) - the instruments (legal, technological, economic, ...) for environmental management - evolution of environmental policies - sustainable development.

The last chapter is dedicated to the relation between enterprises and the environement: factors who determine the environmental policy of enterprises, the methods used to integrate the environmental issues, the environmental management systems (ISO14000, EMAS).

In parallell to the course, conferences are organized: environemental managers of industrial companies will explain the environmental issues they are facing and the solutions adopted.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The objective of the course is twofold : 1) to develop the critical sense and the analysis capacity as regards the environmental management issues; 2) to learn the objectives, the principles and the methods of sound environmental mangement.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

There is no pre-requisite (the course is based on fundamental notions).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

A personal home-work is asked for to each student : a search and analysis of the content of an internet web-site.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The course is composed of oral lectures, which include a large interactivity with the students. One of the lectures could take place in the premises of regional companies. The conferences are given by environmental specialists of companies. The students can meet realistic situations and case-studies. The active participation of the students is asked for.

Recommended or required readings

Lecture notes (power point) are available for each of the oral lecture of the course. The notes provide literature and internet sites references. As regards the conferences given by external environmental managers, a copy of the presentation is generally provided by the speaker.

Assessment methods and criteria

The final evaluation consists of an oral exam (100% of the final mark) : -A (closed) list of questions is drawn up with the students at the end of the course. During the oral exam, the student presents one of the questions which is randomly selected. - Each student is also asked for to analyze an internet web-site and to present a summary of his analysis.

Each year, a topical environmental issue is examined more in detail. The active participation of the sudents is asked for.
The students are also invited to participate in various events (conferences, ...) organized by the University. These events are dealing with environmental, social responsability and sustainable development issues.
