Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course includes the following topics: silicate melts and volatile fluids; crystal-melt equilibria; chemical dynamics of melts and crystals; magma ascent and emplacement; volcanism; generation and differentiation of magmas; layered intrusions; petrotectonic associations.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course provides a broad overview of the study of magmatic rocks with emphasis on controlling petrologic processes.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Reference is being made to notions of thermodynamics and chemistry (CHIM0084-1, PHYS2007-1, INFO0205-1) as well as to the topics provided in the course on "Theoretical petrology" (GEOL0026-2) and "Cristallography and Mineralogy" (GEOL0005-4). The fieldwork requires the knowledge of the basics of geological mapping (GEOL0286-1).
The courses of "Tectonics" (GEOL0029-5),  "Mineralogy and Radiocristallography" (MINE0201-3) and of "Geochemistry" (GEOL0206-3) are co-requisites.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

During the labs, the main categories of magmatic rocks are observed under the polarizing microscope and as whole rock samples. Emphasis is given to nomenclature and textures as well as to the conditions of formation.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

8 lectures of 2 hours, 7 labs of 4 hours.

Recommended or required readings

Notes are provided at the first lecture References : - Igneous petrology, Best M.G. & Christiansen E.H., Blackwell science -Igneous and metamorphic petrology, Best M.G.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam on theory and oral exam for the labs.
