Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
This specialized course is in two parts:
(1) Sedimentary basin analysis (sequential analyses, sedimentary models, cyclostratigraphy).
(2) carbonate diagenesis (mineralogy and petrology of carbonate minerals, diagenetic sequences). Methods include petrography, cathodoluminescence, isotopic geochemistry.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
(1) Interpretation of a sedimentary bassin, specially in terms of sea-level variations. What are climatic and orbital cycles, how can we interpret them and use them to improve temporal resolution.
(2) Recognition and interpretation of a diagenetic sequence. Use of cathodoluminescence and isotopic geochemistry.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
GEOL0018-1 Sédimentologie et pétrologie sédimentaire
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures with slides. Study of thin sections of carbonate rocks.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Face-to-face. Lectures and practical work in B18/B20.
Recommended or required readings
The slides will be available on MyUlg after each lecture.
Diagenèse et dynamique des bassins sédimentaires: .pdf file.
Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination including the description and interpretation of thin sections of carbonate rocks.
