Learning unit contents

1 - Coordinate Reference System in the Plan. 2 - Coordinate Reference System on the Sphere. 3 - Geometry of the Spheroid. 4 - Mathematics of Map Projections. 5 - Projections Properties. 6 - Azimuthal Projections. 7 - Cylindrical Projections. 8 - Conical Projections. 9 - Projections of the Whole World. 10- Suitable Use of Projections.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

- Transformations from the Spheroid to the plan.
- Analysis of the generated alterations.
- Methods and properties of the cartographic projections.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

- Mathematics - Geodesy - Cartography - Numeric Analysis

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Computation of projected coordinates (and inverse operations) and calculation of alterations in various types of projections.
Using libraries of geometric transformations in the development of various projections.
Using the parameters and metadata of projections in GIS and spatial DBMS (geo-referencing).

Assessment methods and criteria

Exercises: exercises carried out during the year are evaluated (30%). In case of failure, a written practical complementary examination is mandatory.
Theory: oral examination (70%)
Success is conditionned by the success in both parts (theory and practical). In case of failure, partial exemption (theory or practical) coud be given.
