Learning unit contents

The theoretical course is made of 5 chapters:


  • The measure of development
  • The openeness to international trade
  • The causes of underdevelopment
  • Regional disparities
  • The conceptions on development and their evolutions
  • The key concepts of territorial development
  • The factors affecting regional competitiveness
  • The European regional policy

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Provide to the future geographers theoretical and practical knowledges about territorial development.
Those knowledges have three main purposes:  - to allow students to reframe issues and political debates in the field of territorial development; - to prepare students to intervene in the fields of territorial developments and spatial planning (local developments interventions, urban planning interventions, management of European projects...).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

  • Geography concepts and methods as taught in Bac 1, 2 and 3.
  • Notions of micro- and macroeconomics
  • An open attitude towards social and economic problems.
  • Learning unit "Spatial planning"

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

15 hours of theoretical lectures. Practical exercises are organized in the context of the learning unit "Territorial Policies Seminar and Territorial Projects". This is made of a personal exercise on a UE country. It is made of both, a research on regional disparities and a research on development policies.
