Learning unit contents

This course will tackle some of the fundamentals of transport. The following topics will be covered:

  • Introduction (Motivation why transportation engineering is important, three market model, etc)
  • Decision making
  • Geography/Networks
  • Modelling/forecasting
  • Evaluation (large focus on cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and multiple criteria analysis (MCA))
  • Transit (e.g. network design)
  • Multi-modal transport and networks
  • Traffic flow (traffic signals, traffic control)
  • Geometric design (vertical, horizontal curves)

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The student must have an understanding of basic transportation concepts and of how these concepts are relevant for construction engineers.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Elementary scientific notions: statistics, algebra

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The lectures will take place in the first term (first eight weeks) on Tuesday.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation is based on an oral exam.
