Introduction to the visits of wood industries Introduction to wood technology Transformation technics in relation to forest resources and economical background Description of various technologies, for instance: - Slicing and Peeling - Plywood - Pulp and paper - Sawing - Wood frames - Flooring Wood energy (Combustion, densification, gazification, charcoal, energetic transition)
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
To provide a well-argued knowledge of the various wood transformation technologies taking into account the global market changes
After completing the course the student is expected to
Analyse the potential of development of primary wood processing units taking into account available resources and economic environment
Point out strength and weakness of a wood industry
Compare various technologies available for log processing, solid wood drying and wood building
Assess the relevance of various ways to produce energy from wood residues
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Basic knowledge in wood science
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Short introduction of wood technologies and processes. Preparation of plants visits Visit of various plants: softwood sawmill, hardwood sawmill, carpentry, laminated wood plant A personal written report on a specific scientific issue and a visited wood industry will be requested

Written personal report (50%) and oral examination (50%) Exemption from the oral examination if the personal report meets the minimum requirements. Joint evaluation with "Wood-based products" (single examination)
