Learning unit contents

Interference problems : normal mode and common-mode voltages, ground loops, bridge circuits. Connection theory: earthing, guarding and shielding. Advanced measurement circuits using operational amplifiers and instrumentation amplifiers. Noise and noise rejection. Low voltage measurements and applications. Low current measurements and applications. Practical limitations of digital multimeters and data acquisition systems. Electrical characterisation of materials used in electrical engineering : conducting, semiconducting, dielectric and insulating materials. High voltage measurements. Magnetic measurement methods.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of theoretical and practical considerations involved in precision electrical measurements
  • understand how various materials are used in electrical engineering and how to characterise them;
  • demonstrate practical skills as well as the ability to carry out successful measurements of low-level signals
  • minimize interference phenomena observed in high-sensitivity electrical measurements.

Practical courses involve mandatory laboratory experiments and exercices

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Theoretical part (30 hours) : 1st quadrimester, Tuesday afternoon.
T. P. (30 hours) : schedule to be discussed, depending on the measurement lab vacancies

A copy of the slides will be given at the first lecture.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam (practical part and theoretical part) Throughout the year : laboratory reports.
 
Each of the laboratory sessions is mandatory and should be prepared in advance by reading carefully the corresponding section of the "laboratory" files.
Students who have not attended all laboratory sessions are not eligible for the oral exam; this rule applies both for 1st sitting (January) and for 2nd sitting (August - September).
