Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Part 1: Introduction to materials science, the different classes of materials existing on the market today, resources and reserves, the life cycle of a material, recycling, the various applications of materials.
Part 2: Structure and bonding in inorganic compounds
Part 3: Characterization of solids : X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy
Part 4: Glasses : the genesis of the glassy state, different models for this state, raw materials for glasses (network former, fluxes, modificators,...), the different types of glasses and their characteristic properties, the industrial processes for glass production.
The course matter is illustrated by numerous exercices.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, students will be able to: · understand and use the theoretical and practical concepts involved in structural inorganic chemistry; · assess information obtained by X-ray diffraction or scanning electron microscopy; · understand the concept of development and adaptation of inorganic materials and more particularly the glass industry.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
- introductory chemistry course
- binary phase diagrams
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The theoretical course is complemented by exercices. In addition, one session is organised so that students can get hands-on experience of crystallography software.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
face to face
