General Biology preparating to biomedicine, part I

Theoretical part

The course of Biology is at a central and capital place in the training of the students engaged in Biomedical sciences and Pharmacy studies. It must give the fundamental concepts which govern the life. The lessons are a true trip within the living world. From the smallest elements which constitute it, we will see how they organize themself in increasingly complex structures which acquire new properties and are at the same time the basis of the unity and of the large diversity of the living matter. We will spend time on the basic element of the life: the cell. We will study how it domesticated the essential energy and how it manages to remain from generation to generation by keeping its particular characteristics. We will consider then the multicellular organizations from the simplest to the most complex and will examine how, during evolution, they adapted to the environmental constraints. Ecology concepts we will allow us to specify the impact of man on the living organisms.

Biology is composed of theorical lessons, exercises sessions and practical classes.
Exercises sessions allow the students to ask questions about the theory as well as about the practical classes. They must help them to integrate the various chapters.
Practical classes were conceived in order to show to the students some animal or plant cells and organisms; to familiarize them with various instruments or techniques (microscopy, drawing); to initiate them with observation and experimentation. Practical classes must also allow them to confront theory notions with a personal and more experimental approach of the living realities.

Theoretical Cours The course of biology does not include a syllabus. The matter of the course are the topics taught during the ex cathedra lessons. The slides will be always available on the MyULg. The teacher recommends the use of the book entitled "Biology" (Campbell & Reece) as textbook. This book will help everybody to better integrate the matter of the lessons.
Reference : Campbell BIOLOGY, Jane Reece, PEARSON Education, 9th edition. For those who wish to buy a second hand book, the previous edition is also appropriate.

In-Year Assessments Tests on theory, practicals and/or repetition sessions. Tests will include multiple-choice questionnaires in order to allow students to learn about the different question types and find out about the expected knowledge and understanding level.
Assessments during the exam period For theory and practicals, tests will include multiple-choice questionnaires.

Warning statement: evaluation or exam papers not or misidentified (name or variant) will not be corrected and will receive a 0/20 mark.
Material: during interrogations and exams, each student will have to bring a blue or black ballpoint pen, a correction tape and a calculator. No exchange of equipment will be tolerated between students.
Paper sheets, fluorescent markers are forbidden.
Mobile phones, smart watches and other electronic devices are turned off and placed in a bag.

The presence to practical classes is mandatory. Two unjustified absences during the whole academic year (no medical certificate) can lead to an inadmissibility to the Biology examination.
Students must be, at any time, in possession of their student ID card. It allows the recording of the attendance to the practical classes. Students without their Student ID during a practical classes will be considered as absent for the current Practical classes.
During the practical sessions, mobile phones and electronic devices must be turned off and placed in the bag. Any electronic device (even turned-off) found on a table will result in the expulsion of the student from the current session.
In case of absence, valid medical certificate has to be sent to the office of the logisticians (Bureau Pédagogique des études médicales - Tour de Pathologie 2 - B36 - Tour 4 - Niveau -1 - 4000 Liège) in the 5 working days after your absence.
Practical classes take place at Zoology Institute, 22 quai Van Beneden, 4020 LIEGE.
