Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course starts with a chapter focused on how plant cells aquire information about their position which subsequently determines their fate. Different signalling molecules are presented, together with their mode of transport. Special emphasis is put on auxin, now regarded as plant morphogen, its polar transport and signaling pathway. The next chapters then describe vegetative and reproductive development of higher plants and illustrate the role of the signaling molecules presented before. The formation of the primary meristems during embryogenesis, their post-embryonic functioning and homeostasis are important topics.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of this course is to illustrate by chosen topics the state of the art in the field of Plant Developmental Biology, from genetical control to morphology, including signaling pathways. At the end of the course, the students should know the vocabulary, the theoritical concepts and the methodological approaches that will enable them to read any publication relevant to Plant Development.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

General Plant Physiology. Methods in molecular biology and genetic engineering.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Practicals are integrated to the course 'Stages ou travaux pratiques intégrés (y compris séminaires)'

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Lectures are given during the second quadimester to students of Master1 BBMC who have chosen the module in 'Physiology & Developmental Biology'. Courses are ex cathedra lectures and tutoring of personal work.

Recommended or required readings

Powerpoint slides and recent reviews on the different topics are available on eCampus platform. Recommended textbook : Plant Physiology and Development, 6th Ed, Taiz et al. 2015, Sinauer Associates Inc., ISBN: 978-1-60535-255-8

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation will include (for 40%) a personal project on a topic proposed by the student or chosen among a list of suggestions. This project could involve different courses of the 'Physiology - Developmental Biology' module and contribute to a common evaluation.
The remaining 60% of the evaluation is an oral exam.

Work placement(s)

5-week training periods are proposed in the course 'Stages ou travaux pratiques intégrés (y compris séminaires)'

Organizational remarks

Courses are given during the second quadrimestre (Mondays and Wednesdays 09:00-11:00 a.m.) at the following dates:  20/02, 25/02, 27/02, 06/03, 11/03, 13/03, 18/03, 20/03, 27/03, 01/04, 06/05, 13/05
