Learning unit contents
Prefabrication is increasingly present in the construction process. It applies to certain components of the building or the entire building system. Its use in whole or in part, has direct implications on the design process and the technical specification of buildings modes.
This course will allow the student to know the different techniques of existing prefabrication and industrialization in the construction industry (all materials, in Belgium and abroad). The student will then receive an education focused on the impact of these modes of construction on the design, implementation and use of buildings.
Finally, contemporary issues relating to new buildings production patterns will be discussed.
The subjects taught are:
- General
- Historical, technical and sociological contexts
- Existing building systems (structural work, finishing work and equipments)
- Assemblies and construction details
- Impacts on the process of design and communication of information
- Execution (shop fabrication, storage, transportation, in-situ assembly and disassembly at end of life)
- Evaluation of systems (costs, quality, performance, safety, reliability, efficiency, flexibility, life ...) and positive and negative reviews of these construction methods.
- Prefabricated systems, industrialized systems, evolutive systems and innovative technical systems related to the original ways and/or large sites.
- Relationships between prefabrication and architecture
- Case studies
- Visits of prefabrication facilities

The course consists of 24 hours of theoretical classes. It will take place in the first quadrimester.

Assessment methods and criteria
- Oral Exam
- The student's written must be returned to the teacher and will receive a cotation
- A work of analysis/design of a system will finally be asked to the student.
