Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The architecture of the 20th century is characterized by its experimentation dimension and this aspect becomes vital at the moment when it becomes necessary to assess constructions, conservation options and technical intervention.
Identification of a heritage building in order to develop a conservation project for it requires an in-depth knowledge of the material it is made of including its technical qualities (solidity, habitability, traditional or innovative implementation and materials) as well as the knowledge, meaning and historical wealth these qualities bring to the building in question.
The construction systems of the 20th century are distinct from the preceding centuries and make it possible to deal with new questions linked to the material used in modern and contemporary buildings: notably the dissociation between the load-bearing structure and the envelope as well as the development of the transparent envelope facade, the transformation of the modern construction site under the influence of industrialization, the permanence of traditional and regional techniques, the study of the evolution of comfort (networks and installations of lighting, heating and ventilation systems etc.).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The students have to know the themes and the related problems concerning documentation and conservation of the modern building heritage.
They have to develop a skill in the identification of the main questions about materials introduced at the end of the XIX century in construction.
They must develop a methodological approach found on the examples shown in the lessons. This must give to the students a capacity to develop documentation and conservation works.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The students must have a good knowledge of the history and the theories of architecture, especially from 1850.
In particular all the bachelor teachings of the "Architecture and society" domain and and the basic teachings of "Sciences and techniques".

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Ex-cathedra presentations, power point, videos and films projections.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Face-to-face

Recommended or required readings

The students will receive some texts related to the lessons to implement the notes.
As far as possible these texts will be provided on an IT support.
