Learning unit contents
Design and experimentation with structures in relation to the nature of form and space. Practical implementation of a project within the constraints of the subject matter and light.
One of the essential challenges of architecture which can from the point of view of an architecture student appear very distant, is that of construction and practical implementation of a project within the constraints of the subject matter, i.e. the conclusion of the process of reflection and design.
The technical nature of the project reinforces its relevance. Each line of a structure, each fold of material, each thickness contains a thought, the very thought which is contained in the very first sketches. It is when the project takes on practical form that the author's thought is definitively tested, whether this be through checking relationships between scales, the relationship between the project and time (checking the quality of use), the relationship between the body and space, the body and light, the body and the material.
The workshop 'Space, Structures and Experimentation' is a place where students can learn about the process of composition, research, exploration and experimentation as adapted to on-site projects, and where they can direct the nature of their architecture towards innovative spatial and technical solutions.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Students should be able to identify the following elements in their project
- importance of form (design, composition) in the practical application of the project on site.
- the nature of space (envelope, full-empty, light) in relation to structure, its dimensions and assembly as well as all related site operations.
- structural invention, refining technical, geometric, analytical and constructive details.
- the study of natural light as a means of expressing structure. Checking the efficiency of materials in relation to the objectives
- the study of materials and their implementation in terms of their sensory, physical-chemical and environmental characteristics.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Awareness and analysis of the M1 project.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is organised in the form of workshops, intensive desk-based site preparation or in workshops and on site production (on site implementation operations), possible in partnership with other students from secondary, technical or professional programmes.
