Learning unit contents

Living: an introduction to contemporary design and furniture.
The course covers the main objects produced by major leaders (producers and designers) in contemporary furniture. Course content is updated every year and includes new models and the confirmation of certain trends.
The cultural and historical context is also outlined from the beginnings of the industrialisation of furniture (Thonet) through Art Nouveau, Bauhaus etc. to the current day.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

- Discovering contemporary furniture as a cultural statement about our society and its role as a mediator between people and their habitat
- Encouraging students to visit shops and showrooms to encourage contact, trials, handling and critical analysis ... rather than book-based learning.
- Encouraging documentary research, particularly through the Internet and the use of IT equipment.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge of contemporary architecture and the major cultural movements of this century.
Erasmus: sufficient knowledge of French to participate in group work.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

- After a general introduction, student presentations will be individually prepared with the teaching staff who will provide part of the documentation and information. These will be on a given subject: editor, designer or a specific field of domestic equipment. Several presentations from the teaching staff will supplement the comments made by students.
- The course is supplemented with introductory lessons and analysis provided by the teaching staff (around 1/3 of the available hours).

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

This course requires the presence and active participation of students.

Recommended or required readings

- All publications on contemporary furniture and design as well as documents from companies and internet sites.
- Illustrated monographs will be brought up to date by students during the course and will cover the main information on the objects presented.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral or written exam on:
- Analysis of documents.
- Synthesis of information contained in the course.
The participation in class is involved in the assessment.

In order to prepare their presentations, students should make appointments in advance with the teaching staff to receive the documentation and necessary information.
