Learning unit contents

« STUDIO 1/1 »: workshop C LEVEL 1
This theme WITH AND AGAINST ARCHITECTURE addresses the issue of intervening in the existing built environment, with attention to detail and the theme of the 'small scale' in architecture. This workshop is a continuation of the course on Study of the Interior given in Bac 3.
The concept of analysing the existing built environment through its structure, history and nomenclature is hugely significant.
An understanding of the constructed world and its environment is required in order to be able to intervene and provide adequate response to it.
The concept of the 'small scale' enables students to complete a precise creative process, from the overall vision down to the smallest detail, including the structural and constructive development of the different scales involved.
The disciplines which are involved in finishing an architectural project are integrated in order to give students very accurate practical experience.
Moreover, the concept of architectural modulation through analysis of content and container is particularly developed. Each potential project sketched must be accurately matched to the subject matter.
Thus, as the project continues, creation of furniture which is perfectly integrated into the designed space and, inversely, volumetry resulting from the internal function of the project will be studied.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The objective of this workshop is to formulate a relevant response concerning a small piece of architecture to be built, added onto and integrated into an existing unit, following the perfect understanding of the latter, through its history, it content, its contacts, its programme and its organisation chart.
The architectural responses, with a focus on detail, must involve a professional and concrete approach corresponding to firm orders in a small architectural firm.
The workshop uses the minimal dimension, the minimal surface, but also focuses on the efficiency of quality and spatial organisation.
Contact with materials is developed, for study and implementation.
The analysis of the existing building, the driver behind the research undertaken, raises the issue of the stakes involved by questioning the site, investment property, light, etc.
The course plays an important role in the hierarchy of the questions asked and therefore in the relevance of the responses.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Prerequisites : Students must have assimilated the content taught in years 1 and 2 for the schematic work (ARCHI,...), the course on the Study of the Interior in the 3rd year, as well as the notion of the Study of Forms for Space, experiences/experiments in analysing habitat and context, knowledge of materials.
Personal approaches based on what students have learnt, particularly design and furniture for architects, will play an important role in this course.
Co-requisites : ARCH1627-2 Prior analysis of the existing building - Marina Frisenna, Pascal Noe - [30h Vis., 18h Conf.] - [+] 2 ARCH1637-1 Additional information - Workshop C - Marina Frisenna, Pascal Noe - [24h Vis., 24h Conf.]- - [+] 2

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

In the workshops, the programmes are explained, analysed and an individual follow-up of the projects is organised on the basis of discussions, and developments of the themes dealt with both on a technical and a design level.
Visits are organised in order to confront students with the difficulty of implementation and the professional reality of their future profession, whether it involves visits to building sites or architectural creations in the presence of their designer, explaining his/her approach and the technical procedures leading to his/her creation.
The workshop deals with one project over the year and the study of various solutions to a fragment of this project.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Face-to-face.

Recommended or required readings

There is no specific syllabus or bibliography.
Students should seek information in the following domains:
*Journals and documentation, concerning the specific field dealt with in the projects in question (themed journals).
*Technical handbooks and documentation.
*Visits to workshops and works.
*Analytical studies on the use and meaning of space and forms.

Assessment methods and criteria

It is compulsory to attend the workshop so that the students' work can be continuously monitored.
The assessment criteria are:
How much effort students put into their work, supported by all the documents produced throughout the project: preliminary analyses, technical support files, documentation, research models, keeping a notebook with details of the project, execution plans and description of the materials used.
*Ability to manage and organise the work and take proposals forward
*Final quality of the synthesis between the idea, the formal composition, the technical development and communication
The assessment phases and their weighting are defined in particular according to the project's specificities - in general: preparatory analytical work / outline / pre-project / project
The assessment is done by the teachers, possibly with the assistance of specific resource people or the addressees of the project / students give an oral presentation of their work based on the graphic material and models or files they have produced.
