Theoretical courses

The urban question is the today's major concern : the complete urbanization of the planet, such as Henri Lefebvre already envisaged in 1970, seems to be realized gradually and even more quickly. The Urbanization process has given way to  a metropolization regime. As we know that city dwellers will account for two-thirds of the world population by 2030, it seems necessary to focus more than ever on what might be called "the urban condition."
The Urban sociology is working to make this  phenomenon intelligible for a bit more than  a century. Therefore, after quickly introduced the discipline (Weber, Simmel, Chicago School,...) we will examine the themes that drive the latest research (both in sociology in urban planning). urbanity, centrality, territoriality (the neighborhood ...), segregation (suburbanization, relegation, gentrification ...), public space, "intermediate" spaces that, taking account of social issues, are the subject of particular interest among architects), etc.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Theoretical courses

This course is directed to both architecture students (3e B) and sociology students (Master). Its main goal is to lead students in architecture and in sociology to wonder   what sociology can bring to the understanding of urbanized spaces as well as how to adapt them  while changing their practices. Architects and sociologists are likely to work together in order to act on the city, from interdisciplinary platforms. This course is an invitation to open a dialogue.
