Learning unit contents

Compared with other fields, and owing above all to its history and diversity, anthropology is far more concerned with and lies at the heart of debates and internal controversies i); ii) that are shared with the other human and social sciences; iii) and/or on which anthropologists express an opinion and/or take a stance in the public space (societal debates). These debates and controversies are the concern of anthropology. An introduction to the notions and the "purpose" of these debates and controversies will be followed by examples (ethics, field of relationships and the field of migration) that will allow students to familiarise themselves with the required analytical approach.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Students will have learned to identify a controversy that involves anthropology. They will know how to analyse the controversy they have chosen by referring to contrasting sources and by using what they have learnt in anthropology and their critical mind. They will also have learned to debate about a controversy. They will bring into play the stances, status and questionings of the anthropologist in the scientific and public arena.
