Part A: Immunology:


  • Innate Immunity - Innate immune system components, complement system
  • The recognition of Antigen - B and T cell receptors, MHC class I and II, Antigen recognition and presentation, B and T cell development
  • Adaptive Immunity - T cell mediated immunity and humoral immune response
Part B: Animal Pathology:


  • Elements of general pathology
  • Bovine pathology
  • Porcine pathology
  • Avian pathology
  • Main zoonoses
  • Hygiene of livestock farming, elements of fight against animals diseases (legislation, veterinary organisations), elements of epidemiology and survey

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of this course is to provide students with (A) molecular information about the components of the immune system, intracellular and intercellular communication of immune components, their stimulation and effector mechanisms; and (B) a set of rules and mechanisms for research, prevention and control of the main pathologies of livestock and zoonotic agents.
After completing the course the student is expected to
- Have gained knowledge on the development of the immune system.
- Describe the differences and necessary integration of the innate and adaptive immunity.
- Model the physiological functions of the immune system at the molecular/genetic level.
- Explain prophylactic measures against infectious diseases as well as biotechnical applications.
- Propose a global and synthetic approach of the diseases affecting livestock.
- Diagnose animal diseases.
- Formulate prevention strategies through adequate hygiene and biosecurity measures.
 

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge of animal biology, anatomy and physiology is a prerequisite to follow this teaching
