Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The course will address the different types of lesions, their pathogeny, propagation and nomenclature, together with the underlying causes, in domestic animals.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The aim of the general pathology course is to make the student familiar with the morphological and functional alterations underlying clinical diseases. In particular, the emphasis will be put on the vocabulary used to describe lesions and the lesional pathogeny.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Courses of histology, anatomy and physiology given during the first three years of veterinary education.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
The course includes two parts:
- The theoretical course of general pathology
- Paraclinical exercises, in part in amphitheatre, in part in the necropsy room
The theoretical course is 60 hours and is given in amhitheatre.
Paraclinical exercises consist of four lessons of 90 minutes. The first lesson is given in amphitheatre and describes the general method of necropsy. The next three lessons are given in the necropsy room and consist in practicing concepts learned during the first lesson and in building a lesional diagnosis as learned in the theoretical course, based on necropsic cases and representative pictures.
Recommended or required readings
Power point course notes: eCampus
Suggested reference books:

- Pathologic Basis of Veterinary Disease, 5th edition. Zachary & McGavin, Eds Mosby, 2012
Assessment methods and criteria
The evaluation takes the form of an oral examination (15 minutes) with a preparation phase (30 minutes). The first part of the exam consists of two synthesis questions and several definitions. The second part of the exam deals with the interpretation and the building of an adequate lesional diagnosis based on three gross pictures. The final, global, score of the exam is not an average mark based on scores from the different parts and is thus considered indivisible. A final mark <10/20 means the student will have to sit the examination for both parts of the course (theory and practical work).
Evaluation criteria are the same for both the first and second exam periods.
Work placement(s)
Organizational remarks
The attendance to paraclinical exercises is mandatory. In the case of an absence not justified by a medical certificate, the student will not be admitted to the first examination period.
The attendance to practical works is also mandatory for students which attended the course the year before and failed to get the credits.
