Introduction à l'épidémiologie

The course will address in particular the following themes:
- definition of epidemiology,
- description of epidemiological approaches (descriptive, aetiological, evaluative)
- definition, calculation, interpretation of measurements of frequency,
- definition, calculation, interpretation of measurements of associations,
- types of studies/epidemiological surveys,
- sampling and sample size,
- sources of error in epidemiological studies,
- diagnostic value of a test.

  • Nutrition
  • Psycho-social aspects of health
  • Environment
  • Addiction
  • Epigenetics

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Introduction à l'épidémiologie

Introduce basic concepts in epidemiology. The importance of the use of appropriate statistical methods in designing public health surveys and epidemiological studies, as well as in analysing the results, will be stressed.

The course's main objective is to introduce a holistic dimension of health in the education of all students in public health. The environmental approach will be illustrated through the "determinants of health".

The student should master the basic concepts in Public health. The student must have taken the course of Biostatistique (STAT0730-2).

The course will alternate between presentations and workshops. Students are also asked to complete assignments at home, and use resources available online.

Face-to-face classes. The calendar of lecture classes will be given to students by the department of public health sciences.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam.

Epidémiologie appliquée aux déterminants

The test includes an evaluation for each individual chapter of the course. The exam is written, and covers all of the material taught in the course's various chapters. The overall mark will be calculated based on the weighted average of the marks for each chapter, depending on how many classes were devoted to them. Success factors Only the overall mark will count to determine whether students have passed the exam. Students who fail must sit the entire exam again. No partial exemptions will be granted for certain chapters.
