Learning unit contents

The course insists on the importance of relational aspects in dentistry. Medical psychology has for objective to add the humanistic dimension to the dentist-patient relationship. The human being should be integrated in his/her entirety according to a bio-psycho-social model taking into account the contributions of biology and medicine, the contributions of psychology and the contributions of social sciences.
The course comprises the following chapters: Introduction, psychological effects of illness, personality disorders with consequences on the patient psychology, psychiatric disorders (anxiety, depression, drug dependence, eating disorders, somatoform disorders), functional pathologies and psychosomatics, specific psychological aspects (bucco-dental hygiene, child and geriatric dentistry, dental anxiety, announcement of a severe illness, referral to a psy) and practical aspects.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course has for objective to provide to the student the theoretical bases needed for the analysis of the relationship and the practical skills necessary to address adequately the communication with the patient.
