Organisation and examination
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Theory (lectures) : 30h
Laboratory : 20h
The lectures are preferentially given in English.
This optics course is matching the needs of Engineers. Physical and geometrical optics are refreshed. Then, deeper matters are taught.
The aim of the course is to bring an overall view of the application domains and technologies relating to modern optics.
Concepts are presented in a phenomenological approach with an intuitive physical understanding.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Bring a global overview of fields and applications in modern optics
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Knowledge of basics in geometric and physical optics (specific courses that are supposed to be given during 1st and 2nd Bachelor)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
In addition to the academic lectures,
20 h (mandatory and taking part of the evaluation process):
Exercise sessions: ray-tracing software introduction
Personal Investigation: bibliographic analysis of a specific field in advanced photonics
Laboratory sessions: laser and holographic techniques understanding
Visits of Laboratories and Industries at Liege area (optics and lasers related)
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Theory: 30h in class room
during the 1st period (Every Thursday morning)
Labs and others: 20h
during the 1st period (dates to be fixed depending on student and supervisory staff availabilities)
Recommended or required readings
Copy of slides (pdf) to be downloaded by the students

Assessment methods and criteria
Labs and personal research works are quoted.
An exam is organized in January (1st session).
Checking of physical concept understanding is the baseline of the examination. Written and oral exams are combined.
According to the "paysage" decree, the certification is validated from a notation = 10/20.
