Questions disputées de métaphysique

The course will bear on the concept of immortality, underlining its relationship to the notion of life and putting into question the causes of the desire to become immortal. Starting from contemporary expressions of that desire, we will study the three main forms of immortality in the history of philosophy: namely immortality as subsistance of the soul, immortality as participation to the human work, immortality as vestige or trace.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Séminaire d'ontologie

Assessment methods and criteria

Séminaire d'ontologie

Students will have to choose between the following two possibilities :
1) Oral presentation (beginning of May) of a paper, which should then be handed in on a written form (for the 30th of May or the 16th of August).
This (40 to 50 thousands signs long) essay should deal with some topic strongly related to the theme of the seminar and it must take into consideration what has been said at the seminar.
The essay must use secondary sources and question the authors it is dealing with.
Students will have to discuss the topic of their essay with the teachers at the end of January 2018 (for the latest). A title and abstract of the paper should be handed in before the end of March 2018.
2) Taking part to a workshop on a book and then writing a critical review of this book (for the 30th of May or the 16th of August).
This (25 to 35 thousands signs) review should question the author's point of view.

Questions disputées de métaphysique

Essay on the theme of immortality (around 20 000-25 000 characters) dealing with an author or a question to be discussed with the teacher.
