Learning unit contents
The course will be made of two parts : regular teaching and seminar sessions.
Regular teaching (François Beets) is devoted to an examination of the reversal made by Condillac in the manner of conceiving the relationship between language and thought. For the earlier Condillac language is the condition of possibility of all thought. But in the Traité des sensations he admits the existence of a pre-linguistic thought, and language becomes a method of analysis. The later Condillac came to consider science as a well-formed language.
The various developments in Condillac's thought will be related to the positions of his predecessors and successors.
Seminar sessions (Bruno Leclercq) will bevoted to contemporary research questions in the field of philosophy of language. At the beginning of the academic year (i.e. on the 18th of September 2017 at 3pm), students will receive information on scientific activities among which they can make their own choice.
