Learning unit contents

Pharmacognosy (partim 1) is mainly focused on phytochemistry: presntation of various kinds of primary (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins ) and mainly secondary metabolites (phenylpropanoids: lignans, flavonoids, coumarins.., terpenoids and steroids, alkaloids...)

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The Pharmacognosie partim I course aims to provide resources for the future pharmacist in the following Key Learning Outcomes (KLO): Pharmaceutical Expertise (1), Preparation of medicines (2), Health Care Consulting (3), Management of work (5), Meaning of responsibility (6), Quality management (7).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Practicals and seminars:
Extraction , identification and assay of active principles from medicinal plants (monographs of European Pharmacopoeia).
Attendance during practical work is mandatory. In case of justified non-attendance leading to an attendance rate below 80%, the teachers reserve the right to take any action they judge necessary in order to allow the students to catch up the session(s).
LOCATION: Practicals: Laboratory of chemistry ( 4th floor) of the Pharmaceutical Institute (B36).
Seminars: According to timetable.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written examination about definite matter. Practicals: 10% of total (1st session) in the exception of an important deficiency (< 8.0) in the theoric final exam.
