Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course has a C1-B2 CEFR level (C1 for reading comprehension and listening comprehension).

  • It continues the development of reading, data gathering, and note-taking using texts or sets of texts and authentic video files (as started in the English Level One course).
  • It also focuses on research, analysis, synthesis and writing capacities as well as oral presentation and listening comprehension skills.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • analyze English scientific literature,
  • follow oral presentations and expert interviews in English,
  • present scientific information in correct and consistent English.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

English Level One (taught in the second year of the Bachelor's Degree in Sciences) i.e. LANG0076-1 or equivalent (for example: IELTS 5.5-6 or Cambridge Advanced English A-C).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course features about 25 classes. Each class requires a long preparation which is essential and mandatory.
There are no ex-cathedra lectures but rather language seminars in which students will be asked to take part regularly and actively.
There will be one oral presentation and four written assignments to complete over the year. These are compulsory tasks. Should students fail to do their presentation and/or to hand in their assignments at the deadline, they will not be allowed to sit the first-session exam.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The in-class course is taught to 25 to 35 students for two hours each week.
Together, preparation, active participation, oral presentations and written assignments during the year account for 40% of the final grade.

Recommended or required readings

English for Students of Organism Biology and Ecology Level Two (2017-2018) course notes compulsory. Internet access recommended.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam in June (listening, note-taking and summarising + graph description), oral exam in June and continuous assessment of progress through preparation, class participation, online exercises, oral presentation and various written assignments.
Students who are absent for more than 30% of the classes without valid justification (e.g. a doctor's note) will not be permitted to sit the exam. The student will consequently be marked as 'absent' for the course.

The classwork mark is always taken into account the first time the student sits the exam (regardless of the session); it can be taken into account a second time if doing so is favourable to the student's mark.
